His overall perspective seems similar to Paul’s own message in his negative presenatation of the apostles, his portrayal of the power within Jesus Christ, and his attitude toward the Law of Moses.

Gospel originally meant the Christian message, but in the 2nd century it came to be used also for the books in which the message was set out; in this sense it includes both the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and various apocryphal gospels dating from the 2nd century Like the rest of the New Testament, the four gospels were written in Greek.

Acts shows Mark can be dated in the 50s, and the undisputed early dating of other books confirms that the Jesus of the Gospels was not the result of a myth evolving over time. Virtually nothing discovered during that time undermines the Gospel accounts. To the contrary, recent discoveries have given more credibility to the content of the Gospels themselves. For example, we know the Apostle Paul died during the Neronian persecution of A. Paul was still alive at the close of Acts, so that writing came some time before A.

Before we can talk about what the New Testament says, we have to justify that what it says can be trusted. We must understand as much as we can about the authors of the New Testament and when they wrote it. The authors must have clear links to the eyewitnesses or be eyewitnesses to reduce the possibility of communication mistakes.

We will learn that even in the most pessimistic, but rational, reading of the data, we come to the understanding that the authors of the New Testament are close enough to the events to be able to give an accurate picture of historical events. A chronological New Testament is different from and yet the same as the New Testament familiar to Christians. It contains the same 27 documents, but sequences them in the chronological order in which they were written. The familiar New Testament begins with the Gospels and concludes with Revelation for obvious reasons. Revelation is about “the last things” and the second coming of Jesus, so it makes sense that it comes at the end.

Revelation and the Gospels function as bookends for the New Testament. Everything else comes between: Acts, 13 letters attributed to Paul, and eight attributed to other early Christian figures.
